Two Canadians Enter Buddy Melges Challenge

With the 2012 London Olympic games right around the corner, the Third Annual Buddy Melges Challenge has taken on even greater importance. Hosted by Sail Sheboygan, one of four US Sailing Centers, the Challenge is expected to draw teams from around the world to the shores of Lake Michigan, August 22nd through the 27th.

The Buddy Melges Challenge is one of just four ISAF Grade 1 women’s match racing events in the country. Contested using the new Olympic-designated Elliott 6m boats, most of the international field of competitors will use this regatta as a springboard to potential Olympic success. This year’s event will feature the world’s best women match racers, including the top ranked U.S. team, Team Maclaren, skippered by Anna Tunnicliffe, and returning 2010 winner, Nicky Souter, from Australia. Teams from as far away as China, Australia, Brazil, Argentina and Europe will all be competing for the Cup.

Having acquired an authorized two-thirds replica of the famed America’s Cup after the 2000 New Zealand event, Sail Sheboygan wanted to create an event worthy of such a unique award. With the successful 2007 ISAF effort to get women's match racing into the 2012 Olympics, Sail Sheboygan figured an international women’s match racing event would be perfect. Because of his close connection with the organization, Olympic and America’s Cup Champion Buddy Melges permitted his name to be associated with the beautiful trophy.

A non-profit organization, Sail Sheboygan, was formed in 2004 to promote national and international sailing competition and education. As one of only four US Sailing Centers, its mission is to develop sailing and seamanship at all levels, regardless of age, income, ability or disability.

Once again the offshore yacht-racing season on Lake Ontario is ready to kick off with the annual Susan Hood Trophy Race. Despite our warm spring weather, “The Coolest Race on the Lake” is really the coldest race on the lake! Over 100 yachts will converge on the Port Credit Yacht Club Friday June 1 to compete in the first of many offshore races on Lake Ontario. This race starts Friday night at 8:00 p.m. and is a 78-mile course that can take anywhere from 12 to 20 hours to finish, depending on the winds and the size of boat.

Day 2 at Chester Race week saw a nice 10-15 knot breeze in the morning and early afternoon. By the middle of the afternoon, a typical Nova Scotia weather system moved into place with fierce wind and torrential rain. However, the sailors took it all in stride and “weathered” the storm, albeit, coming into the clubhouse a little wet. Most race courses were able to get in at least one race and some three.

This regatta, brings generations of sailors and families together for the week. It is not uncommon to see 2 or 2 generations of sailors on the same boat with junior taking the helm.

MAC Opening at RNSYS – Friday, 27 May 2011

The news media is invited to the official opening of the Marine Activity Centre (MAC) at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron (RNSYS) on Friday, May 27th, at 2:00 p.m. The MAC is a Canada Sport centre of training excellence for the sport of sailing. It is being used by members of Canada’s national sailing team for training in preparation for upcoming World Championships and next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
