The Galley Guys were invited to party, in fact we were invited to a Birthday party, make that a double birthday party. Pam and Ken Blodgett, the owners of Canadian Yacht Charters, invited friends to celebrate their birthday at their charter base in Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island. As expected, our drive from Toronto to Tobermory to catch the Chi Cheemaun Ferry to South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island, was well worth the drive as we met up with Pam, Ken and a troop of of revellers for the festivities.  The cast of characters was made up of charterers readying their boats, staff, tradespeople, locals and others that just seemed to belong to this amazing community.

Hours Of Operation Extended for Rideau and Trent Severn

The federal government announced extended hours of operation for both the Rideau Canal and Trent-Severn Waterway, in time for the Canada Day long weekend. Parks Canada will add a total of 112 hours to the navigation schedule over the entire boating season — a great achievement for recreational boating and the result of our industry’s unified advocacy efforts under the leadership of NMMA Canada.

Race Notice: Toronto Hydroplane and Sailing Club

On July 19 and 20, 2014 the Toronto Hydroplane and Sailing Club celebrates its third annual Summer Blast Regatta, open to all white sail boats with valid PHRF certificates.  Fleets accepted. It will be a blast indeed!  A panorama of on shore festivities will surround two full days of racing with seven races scheduled for each of the one-design classes. PHRF boats will sail three scheduled course races and a medium distance race.

The registration date for this year’s Georgian Bay Regatta is quickly approaching. As announced on our website, and the April edition of CY magazine, Sunday July 27th marks the registration day for the 2014 version of the G.B.R. at Big Sound Marina in the Port of Parry Sound. All information regarding the event, the schedule and entrance fees are posted on the website along with a link to pre-register now in order to establish the fleet divisions, meal arrangements and the required number of slips at the various ports-of-call along this year’s route. Martyrs’ Shrine Celebrates The Second Annual Blessing Of Boats & Waterways

The second annual Blessing of Boats & Waterways was hosted this past Saturday afternoon, at the town docks in Midland. The event saw 28 boats take part in the blessing.  The Martyrs’ Shrine worked closely with Parkbridge Marinas to organize the celebration in time for the beginning of the boating season.  Father Bernard Carroll, SJ of the Martyrs’ Shrinecarried out the duties of the blessing while standing upon the bow of a 65’ Linwood Huckins yacht, W.F. Morneau’s “La Belle Helene.”  The occasion was made all that much better because we were blessed with a beautiful sunny day. Many of the boaters that took part in this event had looked forward to the blessing of safe voyage and return for the upcoming boating season.  This is still a fairly new occurrence in the area, but the implications of this event are historic and have had a significant impact on the community and waterways of Georgian Bay for hundreds of years.

The Martyrs’ Shrine is setting sail again this summer as they host the second annual Blessing of Boats & Waterways at the Midland, Ontario town docks on Saturday, June 7th. A major celebration in many parts of the world, the blessing of fishermen and the fleet is a tradition going back centuries.  By blessing the waters that surround the Shrine and sanctifying the passage for those travelling on the water, this practice pays homage to the early Jesuit missionaries who travelled from the east coast to the interior of Canada over the St. Lawrence River, Ottawa River, Lake Nipissing, and French River until they reached Georgian Bay.

Sailor lets off flares and sets life jacket on fire

Most emergency training in flares only allows practice in letting off the more simple flares. I was intrigued to read that this week a British sailor whose trimaran had become swamped and his navigation system inoperable accidentally set his own life jacket on fire when he let off flares in thick fog. He had to remove the life jacket increasing his vulnerability dramatically.

Ted Gozzard – June 13, 1933 to May 15, 2014

Ted Gozzard is described as a traditionalist, a firm believer in quality and craftsmanship.  Raised in Sheffield, England, Ted apprenticed as a carpenter-joiner and gradually earned his journeyman’s papers in boat building, masonry and carpentry.  When Ted came to Ontario he worked in the construction business in London, Ontario and designed and supervised the construction of homes and subdivisions there.  In his spare time he had built and was sailing a much modified Thunderbird.  When the urge to sail full time struck, Ted and his wife, Jan, and their two young sons made the Caribbean their home for two full years.
