THE CHESTER International One Design NORTH AMERICANS
The first North Americans IOD competition to be hosted by the Chester IOD fleet took place on August 29th – August 31st in Mahone Bay and the harbour of Chester, Nova Scotia. Eight teams came from the IOD fleets across the United States and Bermuda with representatives from North East Harbour, Marblehead, Nantucket, Fishers Island, San Francisco, Bermuda and the host fleet of Chester.

Never Swim in a Marina – Lake Fatalities Highlight Need for Electrical Safety
Thankfully, we have not heard any reports of fatalities in Canada, but a recent accident involving a dockside electrocution at Lake Cumberland in Kentucky, along with swimming fatalities over the Fourth of July holiday last year, underscore the dangers when water and electricity mix. The common element in these unfortunate accidents was electrical current entering the water from boats or docks.

What Can You Do to Prevent Electrocution and ESD?
It was a Sunday afternoon just over a week ago when 13-year-old Sarah Grace Tellifero was enjoying the last days of summer with three friends, swimming near a boathouse on a local lake. Sadly, when Sarah went to grab a boarding ladder on a pontoon boat to climb out of the water, she was electrocuted. A 17-year old was also shocked but survived. Tensas Parish Sheriff Ricky Jones told reporters that the accident looked as if it had been caused by a boat lift that had shorted out and electrified the pontoon boat’s ladder. Other swimmers in the same area had previously reported feeling a tingling sensation when jumping into the water.

Chester Race Week 2014 – Down to the Wire
Sailors got off to a great start on the last day of competition here at Chester Race Week 2014. Conditions were great with a nice, steady southwest seabreeze, and winds of 15-20 knots. Most courses ended up finishing in a short range squall under black skies and rainy, blustery conditions. It passed quickly and blue skies returned in time for trophy presentations.

IFDS 2014 Event a Huge Success in Halifax, NS
Extremely close results in two of three classes made for an dramatic finish to the High Liner Foods IFDS Worlds 2014 at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Twenty five countries were represented at the combined world championships for disabled sailors.

TugFest Georgian Bay & Harbour Festival
TugFest Georgian Bay returned to the Midland Town Dock along with Midland Harbour Festival. Featuring more than 25 historical and distinctive work boats the weekend offered a full list of entertaining activities including, tug races with a spectacular parade of lights at dusk, the tug parade, on the water tug demonstrations, tours of the vessels, entertainment and exhibits on the docks. TugFest brings together a growing number of historic and distinctive vessels, some of which are truly Georgian Bay unique. The Midland Harbour Festival offered a wide array of arts, crafts, antiques and many events & activities.

Riverport Nova Scotia to Step Back in Time August 4 – 9, 2014
The tiny harbour of Riverport Nova Scotia will turn back the clock 100 years to the days of schooner fishing, coastal transportation, and rum running when they host the Nova Scotia Schooner Association for their 52nd annual Schooner Race Week, August 4-9, 2014. Twenty plus Nova Scotia built schooners will begin arriving on Sunday, August 3 for the event. Schooners of all sizes from 24 Feet up to 65 Feet will drop anchor in the beautiful community situated at the mouth of the Lahave River on the south shore of Nova Scotia.
