Laisse pour planche à pagaie à la cheville, une pratique à revoir?

En mai dernier, le Bureau du coroner du Québec a publié son rapport sur la mort d’une planchiste tombée de sa planche à pagaie dans la rivière Shawinigan à Saint-Mathieu-du-Parc.

Dans ce rapport de cinq pages rédigé par Me Mélanie Ricard sur les causes de cet accident, on apprend que le 6 mai 2023, Caroline Langevin, 45 ans, et une amie sont passées sous un pont partiellement écroulé qui enjambe la rivière Shawinigan, encombrée à cet endroit par de nombreux débris. Le coroner conclut que la planche à pagaie de Mme Langevin est restée prise dans ces débris et qu’elle est tombée à l’eau.

Retenue sous l’eau par la force du courant, et cela même si elle portait un vêtement de flottaison individuel (VFI), elle n’a pas pu se détacher de sa planche, incapable d’atteindre l’attache en velcro à sa cheville qui la liait à sa planche.

Dans un reportage d’ICI Mauricie-Centre-du-Québec de Radio-Canada de fin juillet dernier, les parents de Mme Langevin soulignent qu’elle était toujours très prudente et qu’elle portait son VFI. Selon eux, leur fille aurait peut-être pu s’en défaire si elle avait porté une laisse de retenue différente. « Si l’attache avait été comme le coroner insiste pour le dire, si ça avait été à la taille, elle aurait pu facilement se déprendre, croit son père, » Guy Langevin.
