What re-scheduling means for Canadian Olympic sailing plans

Canada's National Team

Apr 9, 2020

The new dates, exactly one year after those originally planned for 2020 – Olympic Games: 24 July to 9 August 2021. The IOC had previously confirmed that all athletes already qualified and quota places already assigned for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will remain unchanged.

At the time Canada took its leadership position in withdrawing its team from the original dates, the qualifying trials were not complete. Sail Canada has been effective in protecting our sailors.

“The Canadian Sailing Team has gone through a few tumultuous weeks. The team was recalled home from training in Palma de Mallorca, Spain in preparation for the 2020 Princess Sofia regatta which was the second and final stage of the Canadian Olympic trials. This was followed by the COC announcement opting out of the Games if they were held in July and then the IOC decision with the more recent news that the Games will now be in July of 2021.

“The team (athletes, coaches and support staff) who are now all home and self-isolating are currently adjusting their training plans accordingly. A special thank you to the Own The Podium led Sport Medicine Advisory Council who got the right advice to the team, at the right time to get everyone back home safely “
