ABYC Electrical Certification Course Offered in December 2013 by NSBA

There will be a four-day ABYC Electrical Certification course taking from Monday, December 9th through to Thursday, December 12th, 2013 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Facilitator will be Ed Sherman. The  course is designed for the marine technician with at least three to five years’ experience working with marine electricity.  The student also needs some familiarity with ABYC electrical standards.

The Maritime Museum of BC is Looking for Stories From World War II Convoys

One of the biggest maritime tragedies in World War II is the story of convoy PQ-17 which carried relief supplies to the Russians. In July 1942, this convoy travelling from Iceland to Russia was attacked by German forces. Upon receiving intelligence, the escorts were ordered to withdraw and 22 out of the 33 ships in the convoy were sunk. The merchant sailors didn’t have the capacity to defend themselves and 153 men were killed. Winston Churchill described the incident as “one of the most melancholy naval episodes in the whole of the war.”

CPS Flag Powers Into Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast

Toronto Team Wins New York Yacht Club Invitational

The Royal Canadian Yacht Club team from Toronto has won the 2013 New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup presented by Rolex, successfully defending the title they first won in 2011 during the second edition of this biennial Corinthian event.  The Canadian team had moved into the lead on the penultimate day of racing, displacing the American team from Larchmont Yacht Club who had held the overall lead for the first three days of the five-day event.

Chester Race Week Ends on High Note With Great Sailing Conditions

Spectators gathered at the Chester Yacht Club in anticipation for the last day of Chester Race Week 2013. Newcomers and longtime race week attendees stood at the dock early in the afternoon watching the remarkable sails of the Bluenose fleet as they crossed the harbour during one of the final day’s races. A wind shift prior to the last race of the iconic Bluenose class resulted in a race cancellation as the 3 p.m. closing time approached. Nova Scotia Has Strong Showing at Canadian Youths

The duo of Ryan Smith & Owen Dunkley from the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron posted the best Nova Scotia result at the 2013 Canadian Youth Sailing Championships which concluded August 31 in Vancouver. Winners Celebrated at Mobility Cup 2013

Disabilities were left behind on the dock as 41 sailors from across North America and as far away as Australia challenged the waters of Halifax harbour from August 25 to 30.   The Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron was the site of the High Liner Foods 2013 Mobility Cup, a sailing regatta for people with disabilities of all kinds.  The competitors sailed Martin 16 sailboats which are specially constructed to allow a variety of adaptations to allow people with disabilities to experience the freedom and competitiveness of sailing.

New Owner Plans Expansion at Cordero Lodge

Cordero Lodge, long a popular stop for cruisers bound up or down-coast along Cordero Channel, has a new owner. Laurie Tanguay purchased the marina-resort from longtime owners Reinhardt and Doris Kuppers in May and enjoyed a busy season in his first summer of operation. Tanguay plans to expand the resort this winter, extending the current 800’ of dock space, as well as adding more guest cabins and a hair/esthetics salon in the main building.

RCM-SAR Launches New Fast Response Craft

Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 08 in Delta launched a new Type 1 Fast-Response boat at Captain’s Cove Marina July 27. The new vessel, purchased by the Delta Marine Rescue Society with funds raised through donations and grants, will serve station 08’s main area of responsibility, including Boundary Bay, the southern Strait of Georgia, and the San Juan and Gulf Islands, from its base at Point Roberts Marina.

Seaspan Donates $1.1 Million to BC Marine Community Organizations

Seaspan, the West Coast’s major tugboat, barge-towing and ship-berthing company, has announced a multi-year donation of $1.1 million to three BC marine charitable organizations. The Sail and Life Training Society will receive $100,000 per year from 2013 to 2017, while the Vancouver Maritime Museum and Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue will each receive $100,000 until the end of 2015. Seaspan made the donations on behalf of the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation.

Squirrel Cove Marina Development Nixed by Regional District

A major marina and aquaculture development proposed for Squirrel Cove, one of Desolation Sound’s most popular anchorages, received a major setback in late August when the Strathcona Regional District Board refused the rezoning bylaw required by the project. The decision was a relief for the BC coastal boating community, which has actively opposed the development, but the project may still have a future.

Vancouver Island Father and Son Injured in Boat Explosion

The cause of an explosion onboard a boat that sent a 46-year old father and his 13-year-old son from Port McNeill to hospital is still unknown. Shortly after 3 p.m. on August 5, RCMP received a report of an explosion on a 50-foot pleasure craft at the Port McNeill Fuel Dock and Marina on Beach Drive.“The boat had finished fueling up and they jumped on board to start the engines, but the engines wouldn’t start,” said Steve Jackman, Manager of the fuel dock.
