Che Decastro died on March 6 at 49 years in a freak swimming accident in St Maarten.

Che was upset by a wave and violently tossed around; his lungs filled with water and he drowned. The incident occurred after the 37th edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta.

Che Chuck DecastroOriginally from Ontario ,Che went to high school in Brampton. An ardent racing and cruising sailor he spent most of his working life in the boat business as a broker between southern Ontario and St Maarten where he was was managing partner of The Yacht Shop, a popular brokerage and service provider located in Simpson Bay Lagoon, .

Che was described as “a no holds barred guy, always there to try what was on the leading edge of sports, always had a great respect of people, always a top drawer sailor. “

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
