Ask the Expert
Q and A Session about Weather, Fire, and Insurance!

As boaters, we are all rightly cautious about the damage that severe weather events, and fire can inflict on our boats and our passengers.  We have been trained to consult weather forecasts for our region before we set out on the water.  But we may not be able to recognize that the weather is changing based on cloud, wind and wave patterns once we are underway.  To compound the risk, events involving lightning may lead to fire aboard the vessel.  There are other potential fire hazards that we need to consider as well.  For our April 25th speaker series event, we have invited three guests who have considerable expertise in these topics.  We welcome Captain Bill Walker. Senior Marine Captain at Toronto Fire Services, John Cunningham, who will speak about maritime weather, and a representative of Cowan Insurance Group, who will discuss marine insurance to provide peace of mind should your vessel suffer loss or damage.

There will be a three 15 minute presentations, with approximately 5-10 minutes of questions for each topic.  A general question period will follow the last presentation.

Meet Captain Bill Walker:Captain Bill Walker

Bill is the Senior Marine Captain at Toronto Fire Services and has over 33 years of service as a Commercial Captain with Ontario Northland and a variety of Lake Freighter and Tour Boat operations. Prior to being hired by Toronto Fire, he worked for the Toronto Police Marine Unit, where he responded to hundreds of marine incidents. Bill has worked with Toronto Fire Services since 2009 and is currently in charge of Toronto Fires Marine division, where he supervises shift Captains and Engineers.  Bill is also the lead instructor for Rescue Boat Operations and Fireboat-based Ice Water Rescue Operations.  When not behind the wheel, Bill enjoys watching his girls play soccer.  Bill will deal with three topics of interest to all boaters:

• Causes of fire aboard vessels;
• What to do if a fire breaks out; and,
• Toronto Fire’s capabilities

Meet John Cunningham: John Cunningham

John is the owner of a small business in Peterborough, Ontario and enjoys taking family and friends on day trips along the Trent-Severn waterway in his 17 foot Bowrider.  John is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University where he studied geography and meteorology.  John has many years of experience as a member of Peterborough Squadron, where he has taught units on Marine weather to students in our boating and navigation classes.  John will cover the following in his presentation:

• What causes weather?
• Weather conditions unique to the Kawarthas;
• Signs of impending bad weather
• Safety tips about lightning

Cowan Insurance:
The Cowan Insurance Group is a long time partner of CPS-ECP.  A representative from Cowan Insurance will present the benefits and discounts available to CPS-ECP members and will also provide a description of what their tailored coverage may include.

New Boats: Beneteau Oceanis 34.1 – A Sleek, Good -Looking Delight To Sail

By Katherine Stone

There is nothing more that I enjoy than being with friends and messing about in boats. Messing about in brand-new boats on a champagne sailing day on Lake Ontario at the beginning of the summer doesn’t get any better. To have the new owner, Helmuth Strobel and Anchor Yachts dealer Pancho Jimenez aboard made it even more special, as they can also speak to what they truly enjoy about the boat. We keep our own boat in a harbour that has a long waiting list for boats over 35 feet, so this little gem would definitely fit the bill and feels like a much bigger boat. True to the spirit of the 7th generation Oceanis line, the 34.1 is built in Poland and replaces the 35.1. It is 1,000 lbs lighter, 14 cm narrower and has 29% more sail area.
