Keeping Boaters Safe with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corps. – Ajax
June 11, 2026
CanBoat / Grand River held our first mass RVCC Event on June 6th, 2026 at Belwood Conservation Area on Belwood Lake in Fergus, Ontario, in the boat launch/ staging area. Representing CanBoat, was Robert Cotey and Bill Taylor. The Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corps. – Ajax joined us as CanBoat Ambassadors who administered the Courtesy Checks.
In advance of the event, The Cadets and their Officers were provided with the RVCC video and Declarations. We also educated them as to the importance and requirements of what was expected as Ambassadors for CanBoat/ NautiSavoir.
The day began with light rain, heavy clouds, and strong winds. We were surprised by how many boaters actually arrived to enjoy the day fishing or boating. Later in the day, more and more boaters arrived. 2 boaters were checked early and 12 boaters were checked by the Cadets – including a canoeist and the O.P.P. Marine Unit who were very accommodating to our group! It was surprising to note that no one we checked was without the required safety equipment.
All in all, the experience and knowledge we gained by working together has opened new avenues to explore.
I would like to thank:
The Sea Cadets of RCSCC – Ajax & Officer In Charge, Chris Patterson
Chris Murray, Superintendent, Belwood Lake Conservation Area and Staff
Karen Armstrong, GRCA Cambridge (formerly)
Wellington County O.P.P Marine Unit Members
Our Branch Commander, Bob Cotey
Respectfully,
P/C Bill Taylor
