Duncan 16 and Gracie 14 join dad Scott Blake for summer jobs helping boaters on Georgian Bay

Before he joined C-Tow, Scott Blake spent his summers hanging out in Honey Harbour and Beausoleil Island. Now that he’s hard at work for C-Tow, he’s spending his time around Honey Harbour and Beausoleil Island. How does that sound; well to Scott is sounds pretty great!.

As a lifelong boater who has owned everything from a canoe at a cottage in Penetang to a 37’sailboat to a 34’ flybridge, it goes without saying that Scott knows boats. When a high school wrestling coach he shares that passion with suggested he join C-Tow, it seemed a natural.

Now, along with his son Duncan and daughter Gracie, Scott is helping the many boaters who run out of fuel, need a jump or a tow. Duncan recently put on a snorkel to clear a tangled line off a prop.

“Teaching the kids about boating just adds to the fun of a pretty enjoyable job,” laughs Scott who also has some experience as an MNR Ontario Ranger to round out his skills.
“It’s so much fun, I just love it!!”

My early reading about sailing explorers and fur trading voyageurs gave me a desire to travel by water. As a boy growing up in Gladstone, Manitoba, I constructed a rather poorly built raft.

I planned to journey down the Whitemud River to Lake Manitoba. I managed to get a half a mile downstream before my raft disintegrated and plunged me into the river. I emerged cold and wet but determined to do better in my water-borne travels.

Our family cottage was at Delta Beach at the south end of Lake Manitoba. A neighbour had an old wooden “Lightning” anchored in three feet of water. My younger brother Bryan and I would climb into it and pretended we sailed the seven seas, even though the boat never moved, other than up and down with the waves.

In my early teen’s we lived on the shore of Lake Killarney in Southern Manitoba. Bryan and I had a canoe. We would paddle upwind, then hang an old bed-sheet between the paddles and sail downwind.

Georgian Bay: Just the words evoke ethereal images, stirring something special in the hearts and minds of all boaters whether you explore silently by kayak, traverse under taut sails or power through her more than 30,000 Islands. 

This vast body of water is technically part of Lake Huron, but is often referred to as the sixth Great Lake for its sheer size and diversity of destinations. It’s a lake of legends, lost ships, forgotten coves, iconic windswept pines, artistic inspiration, rich history and endless islands each packing plenty of personality all their own.

Where to start? Good question. Boaters could spend a lifetime travelling the bay and never know all of its nooks and crannies; never stay in the same spot twice and still not see it all.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
