The making of Generations on Sail, the movie
At the end of summer 2020, amid all the restrictions, we were able to shoot our film, Generations on Sail. GOS will be traveling to sailing organizations and on the film festival circuit this season to cities around the world, as it ventures to enter festivals at home and abroad including Toronto, Warsaw, New York, Cannes and more.

National Invasive Species Awareness Week
This week, Feb. 22-26, is National Invasive Species Awareness Week and the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) released an animated video to raise awareness about the threat Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) pose to the boating industry and what manufacturers can do to limit the spread.

My father forwarded me an email with your Photo of the Week entitled ‘Grinding through COVID’. I am in Val des Monts, QC, about 45 minutes from Ottawa and I’m working on a 1984 Vancouver 25′ that has a pretty soggy hull. Now that the gelcoat is off it is weeping moisture, even at -10C.

Whales! The biggest thrill of boating is the amazing wildlife we encounter in and around the Strait of Georgia.
Wildlife and their habitat are sensitive to disturbance from people, boats, and pets. Approaching whales too fast, getting too close, and excessive noise can cause stress and interrupt feeding, mating, socializing, resting, and calf nurturing behaviour.

Plominski tries again
Skipper John “Drew” Plominski is hoping that lightning doesn’t strike twice. Plominski, whose boat was destroyed by lightening two years ago, was first in line to register for the 39th biennial Marblehead-to-Halifax Ocean race to take place this summer.

Hi John, you folks are involved with the Great Lakes area and I have a quick question. For cottage owners on larger lakes/Great Lakes there is usually a chance of large waves unless you are located in a sheltered bay with breakwater.

The Small Ship Tour Operators Association of BC operators collect 127 tonnes of marine waste impacting the Great Bear Rainforest
The Marine Debris Recovery Initiative (MDRI), a collaboration with the Clean Coast, Clean Waters Fund (Ministry of Environment & Climate Change Strategy), the Small Ship Tour Operators Association of British Columbia (SSTOA) and Coastal First Nations, have completed a 6 weeks marine debris clean up expedition, covering over 1000 kilometers of remote coastline.

The International Joint Commission (IJC) is reviewing Plan 2014 and could use your help. The plan spells out how much water is released from Lake Ontario through the St. Lawrence River. A 2020 questionnaire is now available for people to provide information on the impacts of high water levels.

Backing in: Good write up….
What about the tide in your story. Some marinas have the slips laid out so the tide will pull or push the boat… but some have the slips so the boat will move sideways in the tide. I used to have a slip in such a marina.

POTW: A pot of gold in Gananoque
Graham and Diane Segger spent 18 days sailing from Toronto’s Mimico Cruising Club to the Thousand Islands this August. They spent 15 days at anchor and three evenings in harbour, one of which was August 18 when they sheltered from some unsettled weather in Gananoque Municipal Marina
