Provincial Boat Havens are those special places to drop anchor in British Columbia’s West Coast and around Vancouver Island.

The Council of British Columbia Yacht Clubs is the voice of recreational boaters in British Columbia.

Early in the 1990s the council , through its members, embarked upon the task of formulating a catalogue of anchorages throughout the coast of British Columbia. The locations were finally decided, made into a list and their locations noted.

BC Marine ParkThere was substantial assistance by provincial government departments associated with coastal issues. About 1996 provincial government ministers were presented with this catalogue in the form of a proposal requesting that these locations be officially recognized and preserved as Safe Haven Anchorages. Intended for the specific use of small vessels where there would be reasonable confidence of secure anchoring on arrival and a peaceful night.

Rafting in a BC Marine Park AnchorageAny process involving government is inclined to be a lengthy undertaking but progress has been made. Every one of the locations are now digitally recorded on maps used by Government agencies but to date not all are fully protected from other uses.

Alluring Anegada

Shaun Clare and his wife Anne are members of the Britannia-Rideau squadron. In April 2012 they chartered La Bella Vita, a 42-foot Robertson and Caine Leopard catamaran, and toured the US and British Virgin Islands. They will continue exploring the area in April 2013, and are including Anegada once again on their itinerary. While Anegada is off limits for many charterers, some charter companies may allow their boats to be taken there if the charterer can demonstrate sufficient navigation and sailing experience. Shaun and Anne were required to submit a sailing resumé, which included a transcript of their successfully completed CPS courses.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
