New Ottawa River destination opens

The new owners of L’Orignal Marina offer boaters a new destination. Located in a charming francophone village in Eastern Ontario, this joined marina and restaurant venue is the ambitious initiative of long-time entrepreneur André Chabot and biologist Alexandra Quester, both residents of L’Orignal.

The purchase of the L’Orignal Marina was made official in November 2020. The new year was barely underway when all 50 available slips were already reserved.

Riverest MarinaNo wonder the addition of member and visitor slips is already planned for the 2022 season – the 2021 count is up to 62 power and sail already. At the moment, the Riverest Marina offers boaters a stop where they can launch their boat, fill up with supreme gas and empty their wastewater, among other things.

The sailors in Riverest are getting active and this week met to plan a first-ever regatta.

Pontoon RowA few steps away is the brand new Riverest Restaurant, opening this week in a beautiful 1833 stone house. Whether it’s to enjoy the large patio overlooking the marina, the Ottawa River, La Rouge Beach and the Laurentian Mountains, or for the delicious ready-to-eat meals, a great experience is in store. The Riverest’s chef offers a refined menu featuring local produce that will appeal to all: lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch, specialty coffees, fabulous alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and specials like the Sailor’s Picnic.

Visitors will eventually be able to enjoy the Ottawa River to the fullest with a rental service for water sports equipment such as canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and paddleboards. Boaters wishing to reserve a slip for the 2022 season are welcome to fill out the reservation form on Riverest.ca.

 

About the owners

Alexandra and AndreAlexandra and André

Alexandra Quester, originally from Austria, and André Chabot, a native of Prescott-Russell, met during a scuba diving expedition in Palau. Both passionate about animals, nature, architecture, tourism and entrepreneurship, the complicity was instantaneous. Alexandra left her hometown to settle with André in L’Orignal. Since then, they have been partners in the development of another historic site in L’Orignal, the Duldraeggan Ranch & Inn. Inspired by the property at 52 Wharf Street – now the Riverest Restaurant – Alexandra and André had no choice but to see its potential.

Exploring the Lower Ottawa River

The sunny sky suddenly turned black as we waited on the blue line for our turn to enter the mammoth Carillon Lock on the Lower Ottawa River just east of Hawkesbury, Ontario. Then, just after the lock’s giant “guillotine” gate rose overhead to let us in, a strong wind broke the calm. It blew from the east, hammering into the open mouth of the lock and catching several entering cruisers unawares. Frantic lock staff managed to grab one and secure it, but operating under minimum power and with limited manoeuvring room, two other wayward boats started to turn sideways and drift uncontrollably towards the closed gates at the other end – and into each other. So it was Sea-Doo’s to the rescue…a couple of us masqueraded our personal watercraft as tug boats, gently nudging the larger vessels back into position, where grateful lock staff could get them properly fastened.

The Coast Mountain Range and the Insular Mountains that form Vancouver Island make it a truly unique geographical area. Generally it is a region of heavy precipitation, but the mild temperatures and long frost-free periods are the rule and that certainly doesn’t categorize it as Canadian.

Prior to the white seamen arriving in the area now known as the Uplands, some dozen or so native groups who all spoke Salish inhabited and played lacrosse on the sandy beaches that still remain on the coast from Sidney to Beecher Bay. These were coastal, seafaring tribes who always travelled by water, never land, and were, for the most part peaceful.

There is nothing more that I enjoy than being with friends and messing about in boats. Messing about in brand-new boats on a champagne sailing day on Lake Ontario at the beginning of the summer doesn’t get any better. To have the new owner, Helmuth Strobel and Anchor Yachts dealer Pancho Jimenez aboard made it even more special, as they can also speak to what they truly enjoy about the boat. We keep our own boat in a harbour that has a long waiting list for boats over 35 feet, so this little gem would definitely fit the bill and feels like a much bigger boat. True to the spirit of the 7th generation Oceanis line, the 34.1 is built in Poland and replaces the 35.1. It is 1,000 lbs lighter, 14 cm narrower and has 29% more sail area.
