Cobra Two-Way (GMRS) Radios

GMRS radios – often called civilian pattern – are ideal companions to marine VHF radios. Popular for many years, Cobra has introduced a new pair that impressed us and our boating companions. We have always used these products for communication between dinghy and “mother” ship or between buddy boaters who want to talk freely without using priority VHF channels. These are called “civilian” because their use requires no license and range is limited to about fifteen miles or so.

The new Cobra models, the CXT135 and CXT235, are similar in look and feel but the 235 features a full NOAA weather alert capability as well as an All Hazards audible alert feature. Both radios have rechargeable Li-ION battery packs. Advanced models in this line have a Rewind-Say-Again feature that is proving to be popular safety feature on their marine VHF radio line. This feature repeats the last 15 seconds of any radio call to allow full hearing and understanding of an important call that might otherwise be missed.

The CXT 135 retails for about $50 while the more powerful CXT 235 is suggested retail priced at about $60.00.

We introduced the Teal Tactical Flashlight last month but made a mistake in its technical description. This impressive LED flashlight is actually powered by three Lithium-Ion batteries, each producing 3.7 volts (not AAA as reported earlier). These are rechargeable batteries and the light kit includes the charger. The light can be reduced in size and weight by unscrewing one battery in its case and it will work well with the remaining two batteries. We liked the brilliance of the three-battery set-up best. The suggested retail price is just under $200 for the whole kit.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
