Canadian Boating December 2026: Share the Joy of Boating

November 5, 2026

Water covers 71% of the earth’s surface and research suggests that at one time, billions of years ago, the planet was almost entirely covered with water. It’s not surprising then, that people are attracted to the water, but not everyone grew up around water, or had access to a boat.

Well, for many people that has recently changed! In this December issue of Canadian Boating magazine, our lead feature is “Start Boating with Freedom Boat Club”! We interviewed Connor McBean, Director of Operations for Freedom Boat Club of Greater Toronto. With four different locations, he showed us what the club has to offer and he explained what the opportunities are including actual boat driving training. Compared to buying a boat, the club is a supportive and a simple way to start boating with elegant new boats, professional instruction and no big commitments!

We hope that you will share this story with your family or friends who aren’t yet boaters. It’s a great way into our lifestyle!

Also, in the Canadian Boating December 2026 issue we have an inspiring story about the Canadian women in the global sailing racing phenomenon of Sail GP.

Fishing is another hugely popular boating activity and our fishing column in this issue by Ben Fougere covers “Smart Winter Gear Maintenance” and pro advice. Also, on the fishing theme, our cover boat is the elegant and rugged new Canadian-made KingFisher 23XAC. Mathew Channer, our reviewer is plainly impressed!

If you already own a boat, chances are that you have a canvas top and most likely, plastic windows. The “Boat Guy”, Marc Robic explains the importance of choosing the right canvas and set up.

And, if you have a cruising boat in the Great Lakes, Mark Stevens has a host of reasons why you should plan to cruise the marinas, beaches, restaurants and vineyards of Lake Erie – a lake of many moods!

Our resident boating humourist, John Morris closes out this issue with “Singing in the Rain” – Misunderstanding Weather for Today’s Boaters”. We think you will relate!

All this and more in the December issue of Canadian Boating!

The Whitsunday Islands

By Mathew Channer

On my first day as a commercially registered yacht captain, I sailed a Fontaine Pajot 38 catamaran from mainland Australia across the Whitsunday Passage to the western shores of the world-famous Whitsunday islands.

We cruised northeast on a 15-knot beam reach… perfect catamaran sailing conditions, watching the hazy shapes of the islands colourize and morph into crescent beaches, jungled ridgelines and rocky outcrops.
