Written in partnership with Volthium: SafeCharge™ Technology Makes LFP Batteries More Accessible
July 24, 2025
The invention developed by Volthium’s Quebec engineering department brings a major technical simplification that facilitates the adoption of LiFePO₄ batteries in the marine sector.
By announcing its new patented SafeCharge™ technology, Volthium also introduces its new 12V 100Ah Pro 2 battery, designed to start a gas engine, with an impressive 1100 CCA capacity. This Group 27 battery comes equipped with integrated Bluetooth and is IP67 rated, offering unmatched advantages in the marine industry. Lightweight and easy to transport, the Pro 2 model is ideal for boating enthusiasts seeking a reliable and high-performance battery for their boat.

In 2025, the 12V 100Ah Pro 2 is one of only two batteries compatible with SafeCharge™ technology, offering a unique solution in the market.
In Practice
For users who want to replace their deep-cycle lead-acid batteries with lithium batteries (including AGM, whether 6V or 12V), adding accessories to protect the alternator is necessary. Moreover, the intervention of a qualified technician and the addition of hardware are required.
The cost of labor combined with the cost of additional accessories required for integration is not the only barrier to the adoption of LiFePO₄ technology. Indeed, the long waiting times to get an installation appointment are another significant source of frustration for potential users.
Furthermore, some users shy away from LiFePO₄ because this battery technology, despite its unmatched advantages, does not allow them to perform the installation simply on their own. Therefore, for customers wanting to do the installation themselves and not wishing to rely on costly professional services, purchasing a lead-acid battery has remained the simplest solution to date.
SafeCharge™: Less Wiring, More Elegance
All of these issues are solved by Volthium, thanks to its new patented SafeCharge™ technology. Verifications with the Canadian Innovation, Science, and Economic Development organization show that patent application #3,271,088 for SafeCharge™ technology was filed on April 16, 2025.

Volthium’s SafeCharge™ technology is integrated directly into the BMS (battery management system), allowing it to communicate directly with the SafeCharge™ current limiter (DC-DC), also developed by Volthium. This innovation allows users to keep the original wiring, making it easier to directly replace a lead-acid battery with a lithium battery. This compatibility is made possible by the direct connection of the current limiter to the battery via a dedicated port.
Thus, intercepting the wiring and installing accessories are no longer required. The addition of the simple SafeCharge™ current limiter by Volthium allows a transition to LiFePO₄ technology without the need for a technician, unlike competing solutions.
