Furuno NavNet TZ TouchXL Screen AI Avoidance RouteRisk Visualizer

Mar 28, 2024

On Furuno’s new NavNet TZtouchXL series of Multi-Function Displays (MFDs), all-new cartography called TZ MAPS provides detailed coastal charts and the ability for cruisers to plan journeys with ease.

TZ MAPS unlocks functionality such as AI Routing. Complex route creation is simple – just tap to create a starting point, then tap to create an endpoint at your destination. The new AI Routing feature will intelligently plan your route in seconds, taking into consideration the boat’s draft as well as any navigational obstacles. TZ MAPS chart areas are enormous – a single, affordable purchase unlocks charts for the entire US while the charts for Canada come in two separate purchases, “Canada East and North” and “Canada West”.  The purchase of any TZ MAPS chart directly from the MFD also unlocks those TZ MAPS charts in the free TZ iBoat app for mobile devices, such as a phone or tablet, providing a home planning app to create and transfer points and routes directly to your TZtouchXL MFD.

TZ MAPS can be displayed in eight different modes with terrain shading and a variety of color palettes. Custom objects can be created and shared through a moderated service. For example, buoys that have moved from their charted position can be updated on the chart to provide cruisers with up-to-date information.

When connected to a Furuno Radar, two new safety features are unlocked: Risk Visualizer and AI Avoidance Route. Risk Visualizer is a unique function of Furuno Radars that provides a 360° visual representation of potential collision risks with approaching objects around the vessel. Dynamic icons are automatically created for targets with the highest probability of collision, ensuring you have the information you need to maintain safe distances when passing. The new AI Avoidance Route feature takes all the information provided by the Radar and instantly provides a safe route around those hazards.

Sailing into the Future at Antigua Sailing Week

By Mathew Channer

“Standby tack,” Canadian sailor Katy Campbell orders. The crew scrambles over the sheet lines and braces on the deck.

“Three, two, one, tack!”

I wait until the bow turns into the wind and the headsail snaps over, then crawl over the cabin top of Panacea X to the now windward side. The trim team smoothly sheets on the headsail and a competitor vessel shoots past our stern, feet away, as our Solana 45 beats eastward along Antigua’s south coast.
