Editor’s Note: Summer report

Editors Note

Aug 25, 2022

While there’s still some good weather left, let’s take a moment to celebrate this summer. Sunny, warm (mostly) and packed with the camaraderie that comes from spending two years under the dock.

All this has been very good for us at CY OnBoard as well as for our sister publication Sailing in Canada. Your adventures turn into stories, and we have received some brilliant contributions from our readers. This issue for example, we have received accounts of several “giving back” events that help boaters raise funds for the community. I am confident there have been many; the boating community is well aware of its good fortune and is eager to share.

the most inspiring Photo of the Week also falls into that category – I don’t want to spoil it, but I heartily recommend you check out a very dramatic and inventive photo here. Also to check out, but not to emulate, the Australians on electric surfboards on the Venice canals. Yikes.

I other attention-grabbing news, beginning today you can complete your summer boating dance card by reserving an Airbnb stay in Hamilton aboard – wait for it – Theodore Tugboat. Amazing! The press release describes your experience:

Once aboard, guests will embark on a tour of the Hamilton Harbour with Theodore’s crew, dine on local eats and enjoy a movie night under the stars on Theodore’s top deck. They will also spend the night in cozy cabins outfitted with iconic Canadiana filled with nostalgia and nods to Theodore’s Atlantic roots.

That will wrap a great boating summer with a cherry on top!

Many of you reported that after two sanctioned years, US boaters are visiting our ports, clubs, and marinas. That’s good news for us and for our American neighbours. Welcome back.

Thanks to everyone who sent us photos, racing results, tips, ideas and other contributions. Our online publications complement our Canadian Yachting magazine (next issue soon) and provide news from Canadian sources that you won’t get anywhere else. Please have your friends and crew subscribe and, most importantly, enjoy the rest of your summer.

Nimbus 365 Coupe – A real long-stay cruising boat for exploring

By Andy Adams

There is no shortage of fun and exciting new boat designs hitting the market, but for the last few years these have been mainly outboard-powered day boats. Some are day cruisers; some are centre console fishing boats or designed for tow sports. A new live-aboard cabin boat has become a rare item these days.

So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
