Honouring Tim Irwin

Tim Irwin

July 22, 2021

Tim Irwin grew up sailing in Maple Bay, on Vancouver Island. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico he and his teammates Steve Tupper and Dave Millar finished 4th in the Dragon Class in the waters off Acapulco.

Moving to Kingston, he became very active in CORK (Canadian Olympic Regatta Kingston) where he volunteered for many years putting on championship regattas. Whether he was organizing volunteers, managing gear, helping at the launch ramp, out on the water, or just walking through the boat park, he has always been an instrumental part of events in Kingston.

Tim was an Olympian, Past Commodore of Kingston Yacht Club and Member Emeritus of the CORK Board. Ontario Sailing recognized Tim with the President’s Award in November 2019. Sail Canada also recognized Tim last fall for his tireless years as a volunteer.

Tim IrwinTim passed away last year after battling Cancer at the age of 80 and is being honoured with a committee boat that will be named at a ceremony later this summer. The recommissioning team had been hard at work! Donation amount received for the project approximately, as of June, $70,210.

The team started off with an extensive task list to revamp and revitalize what was previously used as a dive boat. Researching, procuring, consulting, fiberglassing, cleaning, pondering, rebuilding, rewiring, outfitting, the task list was endless!

The team most recently concentrated their efforts on cleaning and polishing the hull above the waterline and painting the bottom. Countless hours planning and executing have all contributed immensely to this highly personal project.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

By Mark Stevens

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
