Canadian Yachting preview: Woke to wake surfing

In the May issue of Canadian Yachting, a look at wake sports with a big emphasis on Wake Surfing. The soaring popularity of wake surfing has driven big changes to water sports tow boats. From mild to wild, the 2021 model year has something to offer at every level and budget.

Wake surfing differs from traditional water sports in that the person having all the fun behind the transom isn’t physically connected to the boat in any way whatsoever. Unlike water skiing or wakeboarding where the rider does their thing 70 or 80 feet behind the transom, wake surfing takes place right in the prop wash, where the surfer can still participate in onboard conversations and remain part of the group. Perhaps the biggest factor driving the popularity of wake surfing was in the introduction of forward-facing sterndrives, including Volvo Penta’s Forward Drive and Mercury’s more recent Bravo 4S.
