The Silver Streak Boats Team

Silver Streak Boats started from the grass roots in Sooke, BC with its early stages in Andy Barry ’s shop after long hours working at the Victoria shipyard. Andy had a vision and quickly began drafting and carving out foam proto-types which would one day become one of Canada’s premier welded all-aluminum boats.

In 1987 the first shop was opened after some much, needed renovations. The shop operated with one buzz box welder, a skill saw and some grinders. They outsourced all other cutting and forming. All the original designs Andy drew by hand at night after work.

This small double bay shop would suffice for 3 years before the boat’s popularity evoked the need for a small crew and more space. The second location was the property of an old gas station only minutes from downtown Sooke. Silver Streak Boats still runs out of this location only now with added shops, office space, a parts department and a crew of 30 employees and various contractors. Nowadays their shop is filled with hydraulic press brakes, shears, programmable equipment, benders, plasma cutters, pulse arc welding machines and their designs are created on the latest version of Solidworks. This 3D modeling software allows for all boats and parts to be cut via a CNC water jet cutting apparatus. They are also a CWB certified welding shop for fusion in aluminum and a member of ABYC since 2004.

They are also proud of all the many people whom have worked for them or still work for the company and the many apprentices that they have trained and certified. Many of these apprentices have gone on to work all over the world because of their training at the Silver Streak facility.

Silver Streak Boats hires local Sooke and surrounding area residents in order to facilitate job creation within their small community, and they pride themselves on using as many local companies and suppliers in keeping with this same policy. They are involved with our community and have been long-time supporters of the Sooke Salmon Derby, Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society and the Royal Canadian Legion.

All these years later and Andy plus his crew still produce an exceptionally well-built boat with style and superior functionality. They have dedicated themselves to promoting all watercraft activities for present and future generations to enjoy.

The men and women of the Silver Streak Team are made up of fishermen, sportsmen, outdoors-men and are proud to be building a top-quality product for those who too appreciate the great outdoors.

After being without a boat for almost a decade, I decided it was time to own one again. My wife and I recently moved from the city to a slower, less-congested lifestyle on Niagara’s south coast. We were quite taken by the quiet streets, the sound of the breeze blowing through the trees and the beautiful beaches.  Before we bought our boat, we wanted to research our options for slipping and storing in the area. We spent some time at several different marinas in order to get a feel for the dock life. We were looking for a place that could store our boat on site, offered fuel and pumpout services and was still located near to everyday conveniences.

The Three Fires Confederacy (Potowatami, Ottawa, and Ojibwa Clans) welcomed La Salle in 1679 when he sailed into Lake Huron. Already established as the Hub of the Great Lakes, they helped to create a center of trade and culture with the French in the village of “The Rapids” after the War of 1812. By 1836 the town was renamed Port Sarnia and incorporated in 1856. With the natural wealth of abundant timber, the discovery of oil, and the arrival of the Great Western and Grand Trunk Railways, Port Sarnia grew to become the City of Sarnia at the beginning of WWI. It was now a significant transshipment port for western grain and, with the establishment of the Polymer Corporation to manufacture synthetic rubber during WWII, it was now a major petrochemical centre.

After more than half a century on the Sidney waterfront, Philbrook’s remains a rare full-service shipyard with a loyal clientele. Just three short blocks in length, Harbour Road in Sidney, BC is home to several marinas, boat storage and work yards, and the occasional service provider, mechanic and parts depot. At the far end stands a cluster of buildings that is modest in appearance, business-like but neither flashy nor pretentious. This is the home of a unique business with a history of more than 50 years of service to the local marine community: Philbrook’s Shipyard.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
