PHRF-LO 2018 Awards were presented at the Toronto International Boat Show on Saturday 19 January, the frigid storm blast prevented many award winners from attending.

The 2018 Chapman New Racer Award was presented to PCYC member Roger Broad – Kiwi Dream a member of Port Credit Yacht Club. The New Racer Award is for novice racing sailors to encourage them to participate in as many races as they choose and continue their involvement in competitive sailing. Roger had the best novice racing performance based on 2018 PHRF-LO race results. The PHRF-LO Chapman New Racer Award will be displayed at the Port Credit Yacht Club for the 2019 season.

Additionally recognized were the best performing new racers in each district – 1st Eastern – Patrick Burchat – Unicorn Bay of Quinte Yacht Club, 1st Golden Horseshoe – Mark Quinn – Snowbird Burlington Sailing & Boating Club, 1st Rochester – Paul Stack – Y Knot Genesee Yacht Club, 1st South Shore – Mike MacLean – Precious Time Dalhousie Yacht Club, 1st Toronto East – Dave Tomlinson – 32e Cook Bay Yacht Club.

The 2018 Chapman Season Championship tracked the racing performance of 648 competitors in 58 designated events on 5 bodies of water.

Tim Nason – Peppermint  a member of the Nepean Sailing Club was the overall winner, 2nd overall was John Ker – Casual Brockville Yacht Club, 3rd overall was Hugh McGugan – Breakaway J Kingston Yacht Club, all from the Eastern district.

The PHRF-LO Chapman Season Championship trophy will be displayed at the Nepean Sailing Club for the 2019 season. Additionally recognized were the top racers in each district – 1st Golden Horseshoe – Adrian Hanley – It’s a Conspiracy Bronte Harbour Yacht Club, 1st Rochester – Frances Doyle – Tanz Sodus Bay Yacht Club, 1st South Shore – Thomas Lynam – Hip Hip Dalhousie Yacht Club, 1st Toronto East – Sean Matthews – Wee Beastie III Highland Yacht Club, 1st Toronto West – Kim Piller – Live Wire Port Credit Yacht Club

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
