Sea Ray SLX 400 outboard “The Entertainer”

With the major outboard manufacturers coming out with ever larger motors, we are seeing boat builders putting them on bigger and bigger boats. At the 2019 Halifax International Boat Show, Charlottetown based Quartermaster Marine will be displaying perhaps the largest outboard powered boat we have seen in our region, the new Sea Ray SLX 400 outboard.

SLX 400 2Truth is, most powerboats are used as day boats, even those with extensive cruising accommodations. Reflecting this, the bowrider style has come to dominate the under 30’ range for some time, but in recent years the layout is gaining ground with ever larger boats. In the case of Sea Ray’s 40-foot SLX 400 you can have your cake and eat it.

SLX 3Despite having a large bow lounging area there is still room below for a forward cabin with dinning area and convertible berth, and a double cabin aft with head as well! On deck there is more than enough room for guests, with space for up to 22 passengers and crew. The starboard bulwark has an unusual fold-down cockpit patio which helped this 12-meter boat win the prestigious 2017 NMMA Innovation Award. Indeed, the layout drawings reward some close study as the boat is extremely well thought out. Sea Ray have dubbed this boat “The Entertainer” and the name certainly fits.

Power comes from three Mercury Verado 350hp engines, featuring Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO), the system developed by Mercury Marine to improve manoeuvrability without having to use a bow thruster. The helm station is equipped with two Raymarine Axiom Pro 12-inch displays which provide fingertip control of both boat and navigation.
