Canadian Yachting at the US in-water sailboat show

Annapolis invented the in-the-water show in 1970 and it still remains as the last one of its kind in its 49th year- the United States Sailboat Show. Each year, contingents of Canadians troll the docks checking mono- and multi-hulls they may not be able to see in the water anywhere else.

This year the show has added flooring to raise the level two feet higher to keep ahead of annual flooding. Gavin Buckley, The mayor of Annapolis, has acquired a $2 million grant from the state of Maryland for systems to help ease the flooding as well.

Since the show’s boats are in the water, every year Annapolis introduce 400-500 new people to the boating lifestyle through programs like Take-the-wheel to fast track your boating knowledge and Cruising University. Visitors, including Canadians have the opportunity to learn how to live aboard or up your game.

Next year is their 50th anniversary- join in the fun and share your boat show memories at annapolisboatshows.com. The show is always held on Canadian Thanksgiving, so there’s a convenient opportunity to drive down from the eastern areas of Canada.

The Galley Guys were invited to party, in fact we were invited to a Birthday party, make that a double birthday party. Pam and Ken Blodgett, the owners of Canadian Yacht Charters, invited friends to celebrate their birthday at their charter base in Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island.

As expected, our drive from Toronto to Tobermory to catch the Chi Cheemaun Ferry to South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island, was well worth the drive as we met up with Pam, Ken and a troop of of revellers for the festivities.  The cast of characters was made up of charterers readying their boats, staff, tradespeople, locals and others that just seemed to belong to this amazing community.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
