December – Antigua chartering update

Jessica Perraton-Jones from The Charter Yacht Company just returned from the Antigua Charter Yacht Showa private Charter Yacht Industry event showcasing some of the most elite charter yachts in Caribbean waters. 

Antigua is as beautiful as ever, with lush vegetation, pristine beaches, and its infrastructure unaffected by the recent hurricanes. The waters were the clearest I have seen them in my several years visiting the island. It’s amazing what a difference 60km can make in the path of a hurricane, with Antigua’s sister island of Barbuda only that far away and completely devastated by hurricane Irma. The people of Barbuda lost most of their homes and had to evacuate after the hurricane. Some are now returning to rebuild and the Antigua Charter Yacht Show held a charity event to raise money to help the Barbudians in their hurricane recovery process.

The show is held in the maritime heritage site of Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour, as well the nearby Antigua and Falmouth Yacht Club’s in Falmouth Harbour. The area is vibrant with nautical culture; with classic yachts, racing yachts and mega yachts, amid the historical maritime buildings of Nelson’s Dock Yard.

Antigua 3The days were busy inspecting the yachts and meeting the Crew, as well as enjoying the delicious meals they prepared. In the evenings, the yachts group together to host “Yacht-hops”, where you can visit one yacht to the next, enjoying the cocktails and cuisine offered. During the show, contests are conducted for best cuisine, beverages, and table settings, with the top honours being awarded to the industry’s finest charter yacht Chefs and Crew. Antigua is an outstanding cruising destination, with a steady trade wind andan abundance of serene bays to anchor in warm turquoise waters. There are over 350 gorgeous beaches on Antigua, with great beach bars and fine dining. Antigua has some great hiking trails, as well as picturesque villages and heritage sites to explore. There are inexpensive and direct flights from Toronto to Antigua daily.
