The LORC Awards Cocktail Party was held Friday November 10th at National Yacht Club, where a small but enthusiastic crowd gathered to enjoy delicious appetizers.
Awards were handed out to the Season Champions which included Jim Wente who sailed Distant Thunder to first place in the PHRF Spinnaker division while Jeffrey Long in Shane Returns took first overall in the Beneteau 36.7 class.

Other winners included Ted Bartlewski in Drivers Wanted (Top J24), Trudy Murphy in Feisty winning the J80 division, Terry McLaughlin and Rod Wilmer aboard Mandate who took top honours in the J105 fleet while in IRC winnsersincluced Kevin Brown in Notorious (IRC1), Jim McGuinness in Five-fifteen (IRC2), and Zoo2, sailed by Sandy Steffen and crew won division 3.

IRC also handed out their overall season’s trophies and the top IRC boat in 2017 was Notorious, skippered by Kevin Brown.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
