ABYC Supports A Future Olympic Sailor

Sarah with her Family

Apr 11, 2017

On Saturday, April 22, Toronto’s Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club will be hosting a fundraising dinner for Sarah Douglas, who has begun her quest to represent Canada at the 2020 Olympics in Japan.

What gave Sarah the Olympics bug only she knows, but as her brother Greg twice sailed for Canada at the Olympics, and as she was in Rio as Brenda Bowskill’s training partner, she knows exactly what she is getting into.

The evening will feature a brief presentation by Sarah about her plans for the next four years (and to think I have trouble sorting out what I’ll do tomorrow!) as well as live auction and silent auctions. Two cases of wine will be raffled. Auction items include a cottage vacation ($3000 value), Blue Jays tickets, folding bicycle, half price sail and goodie basket from UK Sails, a photography shoot, a one day fishing charter, a day of golf for a foursome, a Helly Hansen jacket and many other items. If you are willing to donate an item to the auction, please contact wendy.loat@bell.net.

Tickets may be purchased by calling ABYC during business hours at 416-698-4498 extension 224.

Tickets are $150, and a tax receipt for $100 will be issued if you provide your mailing address at the dinner. Dinner menu is Boston bibb lettuce with orange and grapefruit segments and pine nuts with a citrus vinaigrette; Roast Prime Rib of Beef with traditional Yorkshire pudding- or Vegetarian Tower with portobello mushrooms, grilled peppers, grilled eggplant and zucchini served with basil sauce and garlic polenta and peach cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream for dessert. Dinner includes a glass of wine.

All in all, it should be a fun evening for a great cause. Sarah has done extremely well in the Laser Radial so far, so come out and support this terrific athlete and live vicariously through her experiences.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

By Mark Stevens

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
