Sail NS Celebrates a Great Year at Annual Awards

The 2016 sailing season came to a close in Nova Scotia on Saturday November 26th when Sail NS honoured the best sailors and volunteers from across the Province at their annual awards ceremony.

Held at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. The event attracted more than 120 guests. A presentation by Nova Scotia’s 2016 Olympians and Paralympians was a great start to the evening as they talked about their experiences at the Games.

Here is a full list of winners:
President’s Award – Denis Astephen. For 25 years of dedicated volunteer service to the Northern Yacht Club.
Sailors of the Year – Paul Tingley& Scott Lutes. For capturing the Bronze medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games.
Female Sailors of the Year – Erin Rafuse& Dannie Boyd. For sailing in the 49er FX class at the 2016 Olympic Games.
Male Sailors of the Year – Jacob & Graeme Chaplin Saunders. For sailing in the 470 class at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Brian Todd Female Youth Sailors of the Year – Lauren Sullivan, Georgia Lewin-LaFrance. For winning the Canadian Youth Championships in the Laser Radial and 420 class respectively.

Brian Todd Male Youth Sailor of the Year – Jack Gogan. For being top Canadian at the Opti Nationals

Hal Davies Offshore Sailor of the Year – Stu McCrea. For being top Canadian boat at the Newport to Bermuda Race. (pictured on left)

Official of the Year – Brian Todd. For being PRO at both Chester Race Week and Race the Cape.

Regatta of the year – Chester Race Week

Coach of the Year – Lisa Ross. For coaching Brenda Bowskill to a 16th place finish at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Instructor of the Year – Kate Pepler, Bedford Basin Yacht Club.

WOW! Award Winner – Elizabeth Jardine, Petpeswick Yacht Club (pictured on left)

Volunteer of the Year – Bryan MacDougall, Ben Eoin Yacht Club

Winning the Legacy Fund award in 2016 were Max Flinn and Cameron Sawyer who sail in the 49er class.

Recognized for capturing the provincial dinghy circuits were Maya Heidenreich (Opti), Will McInnes (Radial), Arie Moffatt and Pat Wilson (420).
