On October 23rd, Johann Tanzer, creator of Tanzer Boats, passed away at age 89. Born in Austria, he moved to Quebec in 1956. According to the Montreal Gazette he started work in the aviation industry but soon worked on his hobby full- time making sailboats. Tanzer then went on to found one of the most successful sailboat building businesses of North America.

The Tanzer 22 is Johann Tanzer’s most successful design, with 2,271 produced between 1970-1986. Other successful models included the Tanzer 7.5 and Tanzer 26. TanzerIndustries was closed in 1987 but the majority of his great boats are still in use today, most in Canadian waters.
