On the often overlooked yet welcoming shores of the Strait of Canso the Mulgrave Marine Park is in its infancy but well-suited to serve your boating needs.

Spearheaded by a small group of local volunteers the Marine Park located at Venus Cove is quickly becoming home to many local pleasure craft and fishing vessels. some boat owners come as far away as Halifax.

The natural lay of the land supplies great protection from a north wind and it’s breakwater system provides protection from the south, however there is a plan to offer greater protection.

Like most of rural Nova Scotia the Mulgrave Marine Park is a product of great community spirit with a dose of passion. The clubhouse has served as the focal point for many community events ranging from lobster suppers and most recently the Scotia Days Festival.

Across the street from the clubhouse there is a museum dedicated to Mulgrave’s rich history despite its size it would take a few days for one to fully immerse oneself in the numerous artifacts donated by past and current members of the local population.

For those who are simply using the Marine Park as a stopover, do yourself a favor and visit the museum as it will give you a snapshot of life in rural Nova Scotia in a bygone era.

With very reasonable rates and amenities such as fresh water and power the Marine Park located at Venus Cove is a great stop over point for those transiting from the Great Lakes as it is only a day sail away from Cape Breton’s majestic Bras d’ or Lakes.

Dodging holiday havoc in the tropics

Getting out of town was top-of-mind as it was only November and I was already saturated with Christmas traditions – the music, the glitter, the cookies, the sales. A week in relatively remote Belize was the siren song so we booked a 45-foot catamaran with The Moorings and packed our bags.
