RVYC’s Cadboro Bay marina receives their four anchor certification.

Royal Victoria Yacht Club (RVYC) – the oldest yacht club in Western Canada – is the newest to achieve certification in Georgia Strait Alliance’s Clean Marine BC program, earning a four-anchor rating.

“We’re proud to be setting a precedent for environmental stewardship in the Strait of Georgia and beyond,” says Simon Gatrell, RVYC’s General Manager.

RVYC raised its Clean Marine BC flag in a ceremony at the Club on August 19.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
