3 Nova Scotia Sailors & 1 Coach Named to Team Canada

Congratulations to the three Nova Scotia sailors (4 if you count Danielle Boyd, originally from Ontario, but now living in NS) and 1 coach on being nominated to Team Canada that will be competing at the Rio Olympic Games next month. Sailors are Jacob & Graeme Chaplin-Saunders in the 470 class and Erin Rafuse in the 49er FX class. Provincial Coach Lisa Ross (shown at left) will also be part of the team as she is teaming up to coach Radial Sailor Brenda Bowskill from Ontario

New “Kirby Torch” Replaces The Laser – Production To Come To Canada

Bruce Kirby, a Canadian and the original designer of the Laser is launching the “Kirby Torch”.

The Laser sailboat is no longer in production in North America and Europe and because the Laser trademark is being held by the former builder, the boat’s name had to be changed in order for Bruce Kirby’s design to continue to be sold world-wide as a One Design class. 

The newly-christened Kirby Torch has a very Canadian focus. The Laser started in Canada, quickly becoming an IYRU-recognized international class in 1974. Then in 1983, the original builder went bankrupt and rights to the design reverted to Bruce Kirby Inc.

Nova Scotia Has Strong Showing at Canadian Youths

The duo of Ryan Smith & Owen Dunkley from the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron posted the best Nova Scotia result at the 2013 Canadian Youth Sailing Championships which concluded August 31 in Vancouver. The pair finished in 2nd place overall in the 420 class and were closely followed by the team of Erin & Kyla MacLennan (RNSYS) in 4th Place. 25 boats competed in the 420 class. Marlow-Hunter Ships 100th Sailboat and First Power Boat

Marlow-Hunter LLC, the corporation that bought the assets of Hunter Marine Corporation and selected assets of Mainship Corporation out of  a CH.11 proceeding,  shipped its 100th keel sailboat since closing on the purchase in mid-August.  Simultaneously, the first Mainship produced at the Marlow-Hunter facility, which was recently introduced at the Miami International Boat show was shipped.
