May 24, 2016

Sail Canada is pleased to announce that Brenda Bowskill (RCYC) has been selected to represent Canada in Rio in the single-handed Radial class.

Brenda has consistently performed as top Canadian Radial sailor over the course of the Olympic trials including her most recent 10th place finish at the 2016 Radial World Championships in Vallarta, Mexico. Other notable performances include 15th at 2016 Miami World Cup and 2015 Senior National Championship title. Brenda also finished 8th at the 2015 Pan American Games in her hometown Toronto, ON.

The Whitby native sails out of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club and has been a member of the National team for the last 6 years. Brenda will make her first trip to the Olympic Games at the age of 24. “I am so excited to have been selected as the Radial representative for the 2016 Rio Olympics! I don’t even really think it has fully sunken in yet,” exclaims Bowskill. “This journey has challenged me as an athlete and a person in so many ways. To have the privilege to represent my country on the biggest sporting stage in the world is an honour. I am very much looking forward to making my Olympic debut!”

Brenda’s 10th place finish at the World Championships also earns her the title of Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month for April.

This most recent Olympic selection brings the total count up to 5 Canadian sailors punching their ticket to the Rio Games. Brenda will be nominated to the Canadian Olympic Committee along with Nacra teammates Nikola Girke and Luke Ramsay and 49erFX squad Erin Rafuse and Danielle Boyd at the end of June. The Canadian Olympic trials continue for the remaining sailing hopefuls through until the end of Weymouth World Cup in Dorset, UK in early June.

Prior to being named to the final Canadian Rio 2016 Team, all nominations are subject to approval by the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Team Selection Committee following its receipt of nominations by Sail Canada.
