Yacht Club – Indian Point Yacht Club

Iods Off Indian Point

May 9, 2016

Here in the Maritimes we are home to the oldest yacht club in Canada, the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, and we also host one of the newest. The Indian Point Yacht Club (IPYC) has only been in existence since 2013, but is having a positive and growing impact on the Mahone Bay yachting scene. The club got its start when a group local marine business owners started running the Mahone Bay Regatta, an event which goes back a number of years to the days of the Mahone Bay Classic Boat Festival. In order to get proper liability insurance for the race they formed a yacht club that could operate as a member of Sail Nova Scotia and Sail Canada.

In 2015 the regatta was renamed the Indian Point Regatta (see the Notice of Race in the link) and moved to nearby to Indian Point, just a few miles from the town of Mahone Bay.
The regatta has a great mix of participants from cat boats and folkboats to the hotly contested International One Design (IOD) class.
IPYC is a virtual Yacht Club with no clubhouse, although Bill Lutwick’s boat shop in Indian Point is an unofficial home. The club president is Mike Kelley of Mailman & Kelley Marine. Other principles are Zack Green of Mahone Marine, Pat Nelder of Big Pond Boat Shop, Dave Watson and Dayna Nelder. With an unofficial motto of “If it’s not fun we’re not doing it” the club seems to me to be on the right track for success.

The Pursuit S 268 Sport centre console is a do-it-all kind of boat with a solid sense of style. Centre console designs have been developed for the southern blue water sport fishing enthusiasts (and this boat would raise fish with the best of them) but the Pursuit S 268 Sport centre console offers far more utility and enjoyment than just fishing.

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
