Island Yacht Club and Spoke Club

The Island Yacht rolled out the welcome mat to members of the upscale members-only Spoke Club in downtown Toronto to kick off the partnership between the two clubs. Pierre Jutras, Spoke Club President said of The Spoke Club, “The extension of our brand and the additional features that Island Yacht Club offers gives us a competitive advantage.” Co-founder of the Spoke Club, Galen Weston Jr., was on hand to welcome the large group from the city side.

The young and well-heeled Spoke members arrived to a cocktail reception and some great music earlier this week. The island Yacht Club showed extremely well with the gleaming new award winning club house, large heat swimming pool, clay tennis courts, and well-appointed locker rooms and very well maintained landscape.

Bill Duron, the chairman of Blockhouse Bay Management Company, which now operates the Island Yacht Club says the yacht club and the King West club have teamed up on a “co-branding“ strategy where patrons of each club will receive discounts on membership at the other club.

It is a unique relationship with a yacht club on the Toronto Islands started in the 1950`s with a long tradition and like most yacht club having an aging population and The Spoke Club with a much younger crowd. The Spoke Club has evolved into a thriving meeting place where up and coming business types meet in a beautifully restored brick and mortar building in bustling downtown area to share their interests in media and the arts.

Commodore Bill Kassel was proud to show off his club to the Spoke visitors having their first trip to this “cottage in the city“, and noted that the night was a huge success.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
