Tightwads on the Loose: September 17th

Tightwads on the Loose

Wendy Hinman will share her freewheeling adventures taken with her husband, Garth Wilcox, when they paid off their mortgage early and embarked on their adventure. They purchased their 31-foot cutter Velella, which fit their budget better than it fit Garth’s large frame. In 2000 they set sail from Puget Sound for an
open-ended voyage, never imagining they’d be gone seven years, visit nineteen countries, or cover 34,000 miles at the pace of a fast walk.

They lived without most “necessities” and learned that teamwork and a sense of humour matter most as they faced endless “character-building” opportunities. Wendy’s presentation will appeal to all armchair adventurers, boaters and sailors, or anyone afflicted with wanderlust. Her honesty reveals that like most worthwhile pursuits, long-distance voyaging is far from easy. She promises to share their travels with a great sense of humour and a lot of honesty.

Dodging holiday havoc in the tropics

Getting out of town was top-of-mind as it was only November and I was already saturated with Christmas traditions – the music, the glitter, the cookies, the sales. A week in relatively remote Belize was the siren song so we booked a 45-foot catamaran with The Moorings and packed our bags.
