Sailors Assembled for Performance Race Week

Offshore Sailing Race Week

Forty-four sailors and 11 coaches recently gathered at South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island, Florida for the sold-out 14th annual Offshore/North U Performance Race Week.

The week featured racing seminars and on-water training with Offshore Sailing and North U’s expert racing instructors, aboard Colgate 26 sailboats in Southwest Florida’s optimum sailing conditions.

Hosted by Offshore Sailing School’s Chairman Steve Colgate and North U Director Bill Gladstone, the week-long event attracted crews of four learning and racing all day with professional sailing coaches on each of the school’s Colgate 26 sailboats. North U is the education division of North Sails.

“No other program offers so much racing with coaches having decades of teaching experience on each boat. We review instructional video shot during the day as an integral part of the Offshore Sailing/North U curriculum, and Florida’s Gulf Coast is a wonderful learning and sailing destination,” said Colgate. “We had a great week.”

“Performance Race Week was fantastic,” said Winter Hawley of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. “What you learn in one week is more valuable than anything you’ll learn in years of sailing.”

In partnership with The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel, the Colgate 26 boats flew special co-branded mainsails to commemorate Offshore Sailing School’s 50th anniversary this year. The 15th annual Performance Race Week will be held again on Captiva Island April 19-25, 2015. Race Week information is available at www.OffshoreSailing.com.

Offshore Sailing School is America’s No. 1 sailing school and has taught more than 130,000 adults and families to sail or sail better, providing all levels of Colgate Sailing and US Sailing certification from Basic Keelboat through Offshore Passage.

Offshore Sailing School packages its courses with accommodations at South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island, the Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina on Fort Myers Beach and the Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, and Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina and The Moorings/Mariner Inn in the British Virgin Islands. Sailing and cruising courses, and a sailing club are also available at Offshore Sailing’s commuter locations at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, New Jersey, and Pier 25 in Tribeca in New York City.

By Andy Adams

There is no shortage of fun and exciting new boat designs hitting the market, but for the last few years these have been mainly outboard-powered day boats. So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
