Happy Holidays 2013

2013 has been an interesting and eventful one in the yachting world.  The cleanup of Hurricane Sandy in the southeastern part of our world kept many people who would rather be boating busy right into the summer.  New innovations in equipment and electronics made the America’s Cup race a nail-biting finale to follow as America’s Team Oracle finally mastered their electronics to come from behind and triumph over New Zealand’s Team Emirates in a flying and drawn-out finish.  Boat shows across Canada and indeed North America saw great attendance, providing an optimistic upswing for the yachting industry in general.  Water levels in Lake Michigan Huron which were at an alarming low in the fall of 2012 showed steady improvement over the spring, summer and fall of 2013, showing us that the water levels issue isn’t predictable or simple. Changes with Parks Canada brought issues to the forefront concerning fees and operating hours on the Trent-Severn and Rideau canal systems, and in BC the closure by the government of the Kitsilano Coast Guard station drew public attention and generated important discussion around the issue of cutbacks. 

At Canadian Yachting magazine we try to bring you the best and most interesting of the boating lifestyle by drawing attention to issues as well as great products and interesting events as they transpire.  We would like to thank all of our readers as well as our healthy roster of Facebook and Twitter followers who are steadily growing in numbers, allowing all of us to cultivate more boating interest and awareness throughout Canada.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
