Fun Time Had by All at the 2013 WOW Regatta

WOW 2013

The Island Yacht Club was host to the 2013 WOW (Women on Water) Regatta on Saturday June 22nd. Thanks to the 49 women who raced (even though lightning made us call the second race and get back to the club), the 3 women on committee boat with Kristina Gilbert of PCYC as Race Officer, plus Katrina and Donna on the mark boat! We even had some husbands all on one boat at the weather mark, giving wind conditions over the VHF! Even though we only got one race in, everyone had a great  time, the women on Serious, who won this year, said they never stopped laughing the entire weekend! Special thanks to IYC who hosted a fabulous weekend and excellent BBQ Saturday night.

We handed out the awards to: Serious 1st (Oakville Club) a Salus PFD (donated by Salus); Jester 2nd (ABYC) team shirts and a bottle of MGR (donated by Skippers Plan); Uncorked 3rd (FPYC) a wine rack with 2 bottles (from the Wine Butler); and our last place, Shark Bite received a boating course from Craig at Boaterskills . The winners each got an IYC flag and the skippers also received an Ontario Sailing flag.

The sponsors’ prizes were drawn throughout dinner – thanks to: The Store Mason’s Chandlery, CMC Electronics, Informed Boater, Landmark, Mary Kay, Susan Wallis AWAY in the County, Sandbanks Winery and Alex Milne Associates .

We had a total of nine boats racing in light air, and thanks to all of the skippers that took on our extra crew, everyone had a spot on a boat including the Race Committee boat!

This is a regatta for women by women to help mentor women in boating and enjoy being out on the water together, oh yes, and racing too! We look forward to planning next year’s regatta and welcome any input that you have to help us improve it a little every year!

Your WOW Regatta Committee: Lori Mason, Katrina Lewis, Vicky Sutherland, and Donna Scott!

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

By Mark Stevens

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
