Terry Hutchinson of Annapolis, Md., and Stephanie Roble of East Troy, Wisc., today were named US Sailing’s 2014 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year. A total of ten men and seven women had been shortlisted for the 2014 honors based on nominations submitted by members of US Sailing, with these two sailors then selected for the noteworthy distinction by a diverse panel of sailing journalists.

The Wanda III is a Boat of Immense Significance
The once-proud vessel is now indefinitely moored alongside Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre, the open water she longs to race through tantalizingly close and yet oh-so-far away. No longer quite shipshape, the Wanda III hides under a protective tarp. The plastic is for her own good, keeping the elements from damaging her wooden hull, but surely the elegant boat must feel aching embarrassment that in this year – her 100th anniversary – she should be hidden from view instead of gracefully parading across the lakes.

Ask the Experts with Rob Macleod – Ablative Bottom Paint
This fall, while hauling boats Tim and I got into a discussion about the best way to prepare boats with ablative paints for winter storage. The question came up when I passed on having our boat’s hull power washed as Sojourn sat on the cradle. All the boats around Sojourn had harder bottom paints, which are intended for racing boats. The power washing, as you can see, took off all of the growth but left the bottom paint intact.
