Qui ne connaît pas le Bluenose, schooner emblématique du Canada! Qui ne l’a pas transporté dans ses poches ou dans son sac un jour ou l’autre sur la pièce de 10 cents!

L’on connait moins La Canadienne. Et pourtant…

Radio-Canada lui a consacré un reportage fascinant. « La Canadienne », une goélette armée du Dominion du Canada, a joué un rôle important auprès des populations de pêcheurs du golfe du Saint-Laurent, en particulier ceux des Îles de la Madeleine, entre 1855 et 1875 (période qui chevaucha la naissance de la Confédération canadienne). Ce navire exceptionnel construit à Québec en 1855 est presque tombé dans l’oubli. À l’époque, il suscitait l’admiration du monde maritime aussi bien en France qu’aux USA.

« Le docteur Pierre-Étienne Fortin, commandant de « La Canadienne », fut un personnage d’exception. Député de Gaspé au provincial et au fédéral, il a joué un rôle important dans les pêcheries, les communications et la navigation dans l’Est du Canada. Il était un fervent protecteur de la faune marine et de l’environnement. »
