The Sound of Salad –  Clang

There’s a particularly grating sound the calendar makes when it flips to September. There’s suddenly a cluster of red leaves and a hint of snap in what was a caressing summer breeze.  It’s not quite time to haul out but it’s not the same either.

You and I have both heard that boaters never grow up and this is pretty apparent when we see the kids head back to school.  Our visceral reaction remains the same as when we were 10; no more baseball in the park and hanging out with friends. It’s time for sitting straight, being on time and no talking in class.

I don’t want to take this metaphor too far, but it’s fair. Quit cruising plans and docking technique and get down to work on that book report. No more leisurely afternoons on the dock with a beverage and a bag of cheesies; eat your lunch in 40 minutes and get back to your desk before math class.  And by the way, you’ve got to cut down on fish n chips and stick to fresh veg. (as a side note, we noticed that almost every Dockside Dining submission to OnBoard featured a never-ending parade of scrumptious, high stacked burgers.  But you can’t eat that stuff now – that’s summer food.)

The weather isn’t quite wonderful but with a hoodie you’re ok..for now. I was sitting at my desk, contemplating some fall boat action and (I admit feeling sorry for myself) when Tony Castro’s Fall newsletter popped in.  Tony lives in Britain but worked for years in Canada designing for CS Yachts, so naturally I rush to open his stuff. “World Premiere – Rustler 41 – A Modern take on classic Elegance.”  Aha, the perfect, gorgeous antidote for the boating season wind-down blues. I was immediately dreaming of being aboard.

Before I had a chance to book a ticket to Cannes to catch the premiere of this sweet boat, our publisher called and asked if my editorial note for today’s issue was ready yet. My dream popped. Here it is – along with my book report. Reality, please hang on for another few weeks; I am still in boating mode even if I am having salad for lunch.
