Ask the Experts with Rob Macleod – Ablative Bottom Paint
This fall, while hauling boats Tim and I got into a discussion about the best way to prepare boats with ablative paints for winter storage. The question came up when I passed on having our boat’s hull power washed as Sojourn sat on the cradle. All the boats around Sojourn had harder bottom paints, which are intended for racing boats. The power washing, as you can see, took off all of the growth but left the bottom paint intact.

The Rozalia Project is about to Kitesurf 100 Miles from Antigua to St. Martin to support Clean Oceans
Brock Callen and Jeff Brock of the Northbound Kite Mission for Rozalia Project are pleased to announce the Antigua Kite Mission presented by the Lift Project and hosted by Sunsail Yacht Charters. Building on the extraordinary success of their last mission in New England, Brock Callen, Jeff Brock and Rachael Miller, Co-Founder and Director of Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean are set to travel to the Caribbean Island of Antigua to participate in their second mission. The team is excited to work with students from the Island Academy School. Together they will participate in a beach cleanup, and then head back to the school for interactive programs about marine debris, the responsibility of being environmentally responsible and the exciting kite mission. Following the programs with Island Academy School, Callen and Brock will shift into prep mode getting ready for their open water foiling kiteboard crossing from Antigua to St. Martin in excess of 100 nautical miles.

Jingle Bells and Downwind Tales
The 2014 Christmas Caribbean Rally starts on December 14th, from Marina Rubicon in Lanzarote, bound for Nelson’s Dockyard Antigua. The theory is that by mid-December the trade winds are better established, making for a faster and more comfortable crossing; last year, the quickest cruising boat completed the crossing in just 13 days. If this proves to be correct again this year, the first arrivals are expected into Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua from around 27th December, with the majority of the fleet arriving in time to celebrate New Year in the Caribbean.

St-Barth Cata Cup :New Winners on the Island
Morgan Lagravière and Arnaud Jarlegan first at the St-Barth Cata Cup. Architectonik wins the 7th edition of the regatta. Everyone was expecting a battle between Besson and Cammas. In the end, Morgan Lagravière took the Champion’s title of the 7th edition of the St-Barth Cata Cup with a near-perfect journey. The Marché U day ended with a friendly race to Public.

2015 Vancouver Boat Show Kicks Off The Boating Season
Annual event returns in January to launch a new year on the water. Western Canada’s premiere boat show, the Vancouver International Boat Show, presented by Boating BC, is returning in the New Year, giving boaters an early start to the upcoming season. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the First World War. It was called the “Great War” and the “War to End All Wars”. (If only the latter were true. No one thought to call it the First World War, until there was a Second.) Many historians are of the view that the Great War was a defining moment in the history of Canada marking the birth of a truly independent nation. This month, is the month that we traditionally pause to reflect and honour ALL those who sacrificed life, limb, youth and opportunity in both World Wars, and all the many other engagements in which Canada has participated, to preserve the freedoms that we enjoy today.
