Gulf Yacht Club Cruising Already Underway

Gulf Yacht Club

Mar 28, 2024

The Gulf Yacht Club is a small sailing club with about 80 members in the Metro Vancouver/Vancouver Island/Sunshine Coast area. We have a very active membership and a busy cruising schedule.

Our club is very casual, and members are always willing to help each other with any questions or hands-on assistance. Our cruises and rendezvous gatherings are well attended with lots of good eats, camaraderie and some fun and games. Most gatherings are on weekends, but the extended cruises tend to be weeks long. Members are invited to join all or part of these cruises. We welcome non members to join the fun and try us out. Check us out and see our cruising schedule here

Power boats?

The Gulf Yacht Club is for sailors, however, if you have been a member for five years the constitution allows the member to transition to a power boat and maintain membership. This protocol seems to be working well and all members are sailors or former sailors.

With no real property or moorage our member fees are low and currently we are seeking new members. It’s safer and more fun to sail with friends!

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
