A busy couple of weeks

As summer winds down, everyone is hustling to pack in as much boating as they can. That has led to a pretty full issue but that’s a whole lot better than chasing our contributors for a few meager stories in a locked down world.

The result is a loaded offering of news, advice from some experts, new boats, products and ideas and a few just plan quirky items. The goal, of course, is to keep you in tune with the Canadian boating scene.

Mostly, we only run Canadian information or goings-on by Canadians as they boat here and there. That has meant that while we get all sorts of feeds from the UK and elsewhere, we largely leave those to other publications and sites to cover. Not to be partisan, but we are trying to remain your distinct national source. Besides, the Americans and Europeans appear to get lots of coverage without our help.

But when it comes to homegrown stories, products and info, we are all ears. Look what we get – Andrew continues to find new information. I for one continue to learn each time – this week’s Ask Andrew piece on stray currents is eye opening. Marc Robic is getting very good at explaining the basics of boating life with every new column.  The news and information we get from boaters across Canada continues to expand.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
