Olympic Games Sails

Nov 22, 2018

Finns may not be in the Games for long

Yes, remaining up to date on the antics and position of World Sailing is an important topic for me and should be for all sailors and boaters in general. They influence the general public’s perception of sailing and the degree of that perception regarding accessibility and elitism.

Thanks for asking.

It is important as it messes up our Olympians in many ways and it runs sailing on a worldwide basis to the detriment of 99% of sailors.  The RRS (ed: Racing Rules of Sailing) are good mostly but the over interest in Olympics is killing our sport at the grass roots level.

I’m a power boater with a passing interest in sailing. What baffles me is that no matter what happens, we never ever see any television coverage of the events or the Canadian participants. Why is that?

Eight bells Peter Milligan

Dianne Leggatt of Shellbacks and others wrote to tell us of the sad passing of Peter Milligan on November 7.

One of his proudest personal achievements was to rebuild the sailing yacht Red Jacket designed by George Cuthbertson in May 1966. It was the first Canadian boat to win an offshore ocean race against a fleet of about 85 others, many who were top U.S. racers. Red Jacket won 11 of her first 13 races. Red Jacket’s success contributed to the reputation and huge international success.

Peter purchased the boat over a decade ago and restored it to its original glory.

A Celebration of Life for Peter will be held at RCYC’s Island Clubhouse in the spring.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

By Mark Stevens

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
