Meet the Marine Modelers Montreal Club

Sept 28, 2023

by Marc Robic

There’s a scene in one of my favorite sailing movies, Wind, where one of the America’s Cup commentators says: ‘The big boats may get the glory, but it’s the small boats that make the sailor’. That statement could not be more accurate when we follow the various crews of regatta fleets around the world.

But perhaps this statement can also apply to even smaller boats and their talented owners.

Meet the Marine Modelers Montreal club.

Invited to the Ile-Perrot Yacht Club last Sunday, Sept 24, to hold their regular weekend race series, these model RC sailboats come in different sizes and configuration, and like their larger counterparts, club members do measure and set handicaps making the races fair and square.

Like any other hobby and sport, these beautiful machines can be as simple or as sophisticated as the owner desires. Making it this such a wonderful opportunity for anyone, from novice to expect, to join in.

Each member I spoke with was not only passionate about their boat but were very willing to share their knowledge with fellow members and observers.

Not into sailing? Not a problem, the club also caters to fans of motorized model boating. Hereto, the range from simple to more sophisticated vessels will vary and is only limited but the passion of its owner!

I was genuinely pleased to meet these model club members and enjoyed watching them sail their boats and clearly enjoying each others company.

They usually meet every weekend at various locations in the Montreal area and everyone of welcome to come watch and share with the members.

Just when you thought you might never see the Galley Guys again, there they were waving from the flying bridge of a Le Boat Horizon 3 gliding down the Trent Severn Waterway (TSW) in the sun. Glorious!

In the past the Galley Guys have travelled far and wide to great locations to explore the good life on a boat. However, this year we stayed in our own backyard for a real treat; cruising The Trent Severn Waterway.
