Galley Guys Cruise the Rideau Canal with Le Boat

Leaving the lock at PoonamalieIn the April issue of Canadian Yachting magazine, look for the return of the Galley Guys as they cruise the Rideau Canal aboard a new Le Boat. These are purpose built charter cruisers that feature a huge flying bridge with a barbecue and a dining table for great get-togethers overlooking the water. Our Le Boat was a three stateroom model and each had a private en suite head, there was a comfortable dinette in the salon and a very well-equipped galley too.

Many of the locks are just as they were built a century ago and the friendly Parks Canada staff physically crank open the huge timber gates for you to lock through.

What better way to enjoy the memorable scenery on Canada’s historic Rideau Canal than from a Le Boat.

Le Boat at NewboroThe Galley Guys, Greg Nicoll, John Armstrong, Robin Ball and Andy Adams picked our Le Boat yacht up at Newboro, did a check-through and driving demonstration with the Le Boat base manager then, set out for an enjoyable cruise to Westport. The docks at Westport were delightful and located right in town where we could easily walk to the many shops and restaurants.

We picked up our spacious Le Boat at scenic Newboro lock to begin our cruise back to Smith’s Falls.

The trip took us through Rideau Ferry, to an overnight at the lock at Beveridges, through scenic Poonamalie and eventually to Smith’s Falls. The area is quite interesting and other boaters were very friendly, waving to us as we gently cruised along in our Le Boat.

The Galley Guys were invited to party, in fact we were invited to a Birthday party, make that a double birthday party. Pam and Ken Blodgett, the owners of Canadian Yacht Charters, invited friends to celebrate their birthday at their charter base in Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island.

As expected, our drive from Toronto to Tobermory to catch the Chi Cheemaun Ferry to South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island, was well worth the drive as we met up with Pam, Ken and a troop of of revellers for the festivities.  The cast of characters was made up of charterers readying their boats, staff, tradespeople, locals and others that just seemed to belong to this amazing community.

It’s an awkward fact of life for us at Canadian Yachting magazine that while we know the majority of our readers are power boaters, the majority of people who want to write about their cruising experiences are sailors! The Galley Guys Go Cruising For Potluck

What is the etiquette for a potluck dinner? Should you bring a pot roast? Would fortune cookies bring luck? How about something more exotic? For example, a harpooned Canadian swordfish? Why not?

Under glorious sunny skies, led by club Commodore Peter Rourke and his wife, along with Cruising Commanders Eva Robinson and her partner Trevor McAlpine, 31 boats set out from the Port Credit Yacht Club for an enjoyable, but short cruise east to the islands of Toronto Harbour on a recent Friday afternoon.
