The current exhibition is about The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, with new hours of operation. (Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm).

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest accumulation of human-made debris and ocean plastic in the world.

It covers a surface area twice the size of Texas, and contains up to an estimated 3.6 trillion pieces. But did you know it’s not actually a “patch”? Or how about the fact that garbage is accumulating in five distinct areas of our oceans? And did you know that your laundry is likely contributing to the problem?

Visit the Maritime Museum of BC to learn more about marine debris and plastic in our oceans, including why it is exists and how it continues to grow. You’ll also learn about the efforts from people around the world who are working to better the situation, and even how you can make small changes in your daily life that can contribute to big changes for our oceans.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Exhibit is open from 10am-5pm, Tuesday-Saturday!

the Annual Classic Boat Festival coming up on Labour Day weekend

The Maritime Museum of BC is proud to host the Annual Classic Boat Festival in Victoria’s beautiful Inner Harbour!

Great Pacific Garbage PatchFor over 40 years, the Victoria Classic Boat Festival has showcased classic boats from all over the Pacific Northwest each Labour Day Weekend. Each year, approximately 10,000 visitors tour the docks and the boats on display. In 2017, the Maritime Museum of BC took over operations of the Festival, incorporating marine-related exhibitions and family-friendly programs into the weekend’s activities.

Join us on the docks this coming Labour Day Weekend, Friday, August 30 – Sunday, September 1 2019!

We also have an on-going Tea & Talks event that occurs every other Thursday:

Come on down to the Maritime Museum every other Thursday  at 2:30pm for Tea & Talks!

Museum volunteers, archival staff, and educators present unique artefacts from our collection, surrounded by discussions of maritime history and other seaworthy topics – all over a cup of tea and refreshments!

This summer, make a point of visiting the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston.

This interesting facility is the original Kingston drydock and Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A. McDonald laid the cornerstone as his last official act, 200 years ago this year.

George Cuthbertson, one of the founders of C&C Yachts recently donated his personal collection of drawings and information to the museum. In the 1980s C&C Yachts was the world’s foremost sailboat builder.

While the Osborne-Killey steam engine is a wonderful thing to see, we especially wanted to let you know that the steam launch Phoebe is on display there too. Built in 1914, the Phoebe is located under a timber frame structure built in 2008 by high school students and their teacher. 

The Phoebe is a 48-foot historic steam launch built in Kingston in 1914 by the Davis Dry Dock Company for the world renowned astronomer, inventor and instrument maker, Dr. John Brashear. John named the boat after his wife Phoebe Stewart.

The Antique Boat Museum bills itself as North America’s premier freshwater nautical museum. It enjoys a spectacular location in the Thousand Islands on the St Lawrence River and the museum has a 4.5 acre campus with 1500 feet of shoreline for their enormous collection of boats. More than 100 boats are on display every day of the year and through the summer, you can go out for a speedboat ride on the St. Lawrence, row a wooden St. Lawrence, skiff, take boatbuilding classes or sailing lessons.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
