Fish & Chips

July 25, 2024

With Glen Blake

When you are a boater, there are two primary interests: 1 boating 2 Eating and drinking. To kick off this new series, Glen Blake sent us a perfect candidate – The Waubic.

The Waubic

Built in 1913, The Waubic sits on the Severn River between Lock 43 and the historic Big Chute Marine Railroad at Lock 44 near Coldwater ON. It one of the few remaining boat access only destinations for cottagers and boaters to visit.

Glen’s fave – the River Bread

Glen says, “Best fish and chips on the river!  Web site says it all. We go there 10-12 times every summer. Great food. Great service.  Karen and family own and operate this wonderful place”

From the website:  In 2002 George and Jenny Fleet purchased The Waubic as a rundown and abandoned retirement project. Seeing The Waubic as a hidden gem, our crew of family members have been involved in its rebirth since day one. Together as a team we have rebuilt, rebranded and breathed new life into The Waubic.

Our Waubic Crew is a small but hard working group of family members. In the course of a day, every one of us may change roles many times while working from before opening, until long after we close. With many hours of “behind the scenes” chores, a typical day for The Waubic family can be 18 hours long. When you greet your server, they may not be just your server, they could also be your bartender, your cook or the owner.

At the beginning of 2017, the next generation stepped in as their daughter Karen and her family took over the business and hired some of our first “out of family” staff members. While they may not be blood related, our hard working staff have become an integral part of our Waubic family. The everyday face who creates your Waubic experience may change from season to season, but the passion and commitment from our entire family remains constant.

What spot do YOU love?

The task is not a hard one. Get in your boat. Go somewhere. Dine, drink (but don’t drink and drive) and take photos of the place, the happy staff, the food, the menu. Then tell us what you like (love) about this spot and what makes it special. Send your description and lots of photos to us via onboard@kerrwil.com and please put dining in the subject line.

Spotted! Canadian Boating in Antigua & Barbuda

By Mathew Channer

I wore my Canadian Boating cap everywhere I went in Antigua, for the sun, not for the shout-outs. But I sure received a lot of them.

Antigua Sailing Week is an international regatta that draws sailors of every level and spectators from all over the world. Yet I couldn’t walk across a room without being hailed by a Canadian who was as excited to see my cap as they were to see the racing. I met many who were on their 3rd, 4th and 5th visit.
